Dementia Man, An Existential Journey

In 2021, Samuel (“Sam”) Simon was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s. Despite the enormous challenges of this diagnosis, Sam has become “Dementia Man,” a powerful advocate through theater, using his own experience as inspiration to reshape the narrative surrounding cognitive decline. With his newest play Dementia Man, An Existential Journey, he defies stereotypes and inspires audiences.

In this full-length theatrical piece, Sam takes the stage as a man facing his cognitive decline and asks the hard questions of what to do next in the face of what he calls “an existential journey.” It is a peek into the head and heart of the struggle with a broken medical system and a personal and family challenge. The play challenges the audience to imagine a meaningful future for the millions of people with neurocognitive disease, with accommodation and adaptation.

Coffee Time for Seniors and Caregivers

There are many in our community who would like to support our neighbors who have reached the esteemed title of “seniors.” How do we do this though? What is the best way to provide this support? What services are currently available? What services are needed? The best way to answer these questions is to ask seniors and caregivers themselves.

The conversation will be facilitated by Gordon Walker and Jennell Charles. Both individuals have been active in the planning and launch of the Blue Ridge Respite program of Here to Stay Wintergreen, a Village to Village non-profit supporting seniors to age in place safely and independently.
